Mount Rohr looks like a fun but challenging objective on snowshoes. AST-1 and at least five days' experience of winter backcountry travel (on snowshoes or skis) will be required for this event.

Start time: 5:00 AM on Mo., Feb. 17; location TBD based on where the driver can pick people up. Start time on the trail: 8:00 AM (give or take) Turnaround time to get back: 12:30 PM Time of return to the car: 4:30 PM

The trail to Mount Rohr ascends roughly 1,150 m over 8 km, which means that we will have to climb at almost 300 m/h to reach the peak by 12:00 PM. As sunset will be at roughly 5:30, I would like to return to the car by 4:30 PM to allow for some buffer time in case of unexpected delays.

The terrain on this route is mostly simple up to Rohr Lake (at 1,810 m), or 540 m above the parking lot. Once we are there, we can evaluate how much further to push on based on our pace and the snow conditions. The terrain beyond Rohr Lake is a mix of challenging and complex and is largely complex above 2,250 m.

I have not snowshoed in this area. This trip will largely be exploratory, with no real expectation of making the peak (if we summit, great; if not, that is fine, too). The weather forecast for the area looks good, but we will have to evaluate the snow conditions as we go, especially as solar radiation heats the snow throughout the day.

Please read up on the avalanche conditions before you go:

Please review the Avalanche Canada's Trip Planner to gain familiarity with the terrain:
