Introduction to Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding:

Our popular Introduction to Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding (IBS) course is back for 2021.
Come join Rob Janousek & Todd Powell, along with a enthusiastic team of instructors for a fun and informative experience learning to backcountry ski or splitboard!
Due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, the upcoming course will have a different format than in years past and we are looking forward to instructing 2021’s program.
We pack in a lot into the course. Expect some challenges and a whole lot of fun in the process.

Selection is through screening, not your position on the waitlist.

Waitlisted participants will be asked to provide a brief summary of their experience and goals for the course, as well as any medical or physical issues they may have.

Based on the current provincial health guidelines, 2021’s program will consist of TWO evening theory/practice Zoom sessions prior to our backcountry ski/splitboard weekend sessions in the Coquihalla Summit/Manning Park area on January 23rd & 24th. The weekday evening sessions will run for approximately 3 hours each night, with start times and in-person location TBD (located in the Vancouver area):

Tuesday, January 12th: Online introduction/and slideshow presentation (presented via Zoom meeting)

Tuesday, January 19th: In-person theory/practice session (following social distancing/mask guidelines)

The cost for 2021’s IBS course is $80.00 per person.


*Important*

Do not pay before being accepted into the course. Upon being moved from the course waitlist to the registered participant list, you will receive payment instructions.

Payment is due within one week of being added to the registered participant list.

There are NO REFUNDS for participant cancellations from the Introduction to Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding course.

Should you have to cancel your registration after being accepted and paying the course fee, it will be your responsibility to try and find someone to take your spot, contacting waitlisted participants and arranging payment between for the course fee reimbursement between yourselves. However, should this not be possible, please be advised that no refund will be provided for participant cancellation once the course fee is paid.

The only circumstances under which refunds will be provided are where the course needs to be cancelled for all participants (ie: changes in provincial health guidelines prevent the ability for us to conduct the course safely).

Required Items to Bring:


Ski Equipment

  • Touring skis (AT or telemark), or splitboard
  • Transceiver, shovel, probe

Full equipment list will be sent to course participants upon registration, and discussed in the online / classroom sessions prior to the field days.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Based on the current provincial health guidelines, we do not recommend carpooling at this time, other than with course participants who are within your bubble.

Should there be others in your bubble whom are taking this course with you, feel free to carpool.


Notes:


This training will focus on the basic knowledge and skills necessary for travel on touring skis/splitboards in the backcountry.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • equipment usage,
  • trip planning,
  • basic navigation,
  • route finding,
  • basic avalanche knowledge,
  • and more ...
Note that this training is not a substitute for proper avalanche training such as Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST 1).
- Registration is not complete until you've signed up and, if required, paid in full to the Alpine Club of Canada Vancouver Section, either through PayPal, or sent to the Event Leader.
- When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met.
- We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines at all times while participating in ACC VA events.
